“Our aim always was to create a pocket neighborhood in the heart of Santa Cruz that fosters a strong experience of community among its residents.” - Philippe Habib, Manager, CHF

Details of Development

Nine homes and one historic house comprise the Coastal Haven pocket neighborhood. The new homes, designed for universal access, include three different models. A shared garage, with a studio apartment above, is available for community use.

Pocket Neighborhood

Coastal Haven Families chose this design to satisfy the desire of future residents to enjoy a strong community environment, developed over time, where relationships can flourish and neighbors are not strangers. For people with and without disabilities, pocket neighborhoods can offer a more interdependent lifestyle than typical American neighborhoods usually provide. This design is especially appealing to those who prefer a more interactive lifestyle, with shared housing and common outdoor space, while enjoying a private bedroom.

In keeping with the important design elements of a pocket neighborhood, each home faces a shared outdoor space that includes seating and an outdoor kitchen for all to enjoy. Residents participate in caring for this common area, enhancing their sense of ownership and enjoyment of this feature.

Elements of our pocket neighborhood include:

• Clustered housing where parking is nearby but not attached to each home

• Each home includes a front porch, facing the common space, to seat multiple residents or guests

• Accessible homes are connected by a common walkway

• Cars and traffic do not intrude on pedestrian space, though ample parking is available

• An outdoor BBQ and dining area as part of the common space

“When a small group of people are together, conversation is spontaneous.

This fact of our human nature is what pocket neighborhoods are built around.”
